Why is Treasury terminating the ETASM program?
In the late 1990’s, the ETA program was an innovative product that offered the consumer access to electronic banking. Today, there are numerous account options available to ETA customers. It is Treasury’s decision to start shifting ETA customers to other current payment alternatives.
What happens if you currently have an ETA account?
You should have been notified by your current ETA Provider Institution of your conversion options. If you have not been contacted, call or visit your provider to find out how your ETA transition will be handled. Your provider may at their discretion:
- Convert your ETA into an account branded by that institution. In this case, you may not see a change to your account structure or fees, the only difference may be that the reference to the Treasury ETA brand mark will be removed from the account name and terms and conditions governing the account.
- Offer you the opportunity to open another type of account at their institution. Note – this will not be automatic. If your institution offers this option, you will need to take action to open a new account with them on or before July 31, 2018.
If you do not wish to continue using option 1 or 2, or if a replacement account is not being offered by your ETA Provider, it is your responsibility to contact the federal agency (i.e. SSA, VA, OPM, RRB), to set up a new payment method. Failure to make alternate electronic payment arrangements prior to the date your Provider closes your current ETA, could result in a disruption of your monthly benefit payment.
If you currently have a checking or savings account, you may sign up for direct deposit of your payment to one of these accounts. To do so – contact your federal agency to update your direct deposit information.
If you do not have a bank account and are interested in a pre-paid debit card to receive your payment, the Direct Express® Debit Mastercard® card is available. For more information visit www.usdirectexpress.com or you may call 1-800-333-1795 to sign-up.
IF YOU DO NOT TAKE ACTION TO MODIFY YOUR PAYMENT METHOD BY JULY 31, 2018 – YOUR AUGUST PAYMENT COULD BE IMPACTED.
